Urban Jungle: Bringing Color and Nature into Our Brooklyn Apartment

At no time in recent memory has it been more important that we STAY HOME. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York, Brian and I found ourselves together at home in a way that neither of us had experienced before. We were typical New Yorkers—between work and life in general, the cohesive coziness of our home wasn’t my number 1 priority. It started off as a pretty nice space, but in actual practice, it was the place we slept in and watched tv in on the weekends.

But since we’ve been home, my nesting instinct has gone into overdrive. I’ve brought the outside in, filling our living room with plants. We’ve also, and this is the big one, bought a new couch from Instagram-famous online furniture retailer, Article.

Though we were going for an eclectic, bohemian vibe, a lot of the pieces that we picked up ended up being from that Scandinavian emporium of homewares, Ikea. Though I was afraid that picking up pieces from Ikea would make it impossible for us to get a look that rose above cookie-cutter, thankfully Brian helped me to see the err of my ways.

In this room alone, I have 9 babies—yup, I’m a plant mom. Our living room is graced with 5-foot windows and incredible light, which has made it easy for a wide variety of plants to thrive. We have a mix of low-maintenance and more fiddly plants, honestly, it’s the only way that I’m able to keep up with our growing assortment.
